Gasworks unilaterally terminates contract, director Yoo Yoo-hoon releases position statement

Three days after GASCO unilaterally cancelled his contract, former GASCO director Yoo Yoo-hoon released a statement.

On the 1st, the KOGAS announced, “We have decided to terminate the contract with coach Yoo Yoo-hoon. We have also cancelled the contracts of general manager Shin Shin-woo, head coach Lee Min-hyung, and head coach Kim Seung-hwan.” GASCO had one year left on Yoo’s contract, but the team fired him and appointed Kang Hyuk as acting head coach.

On the 4th, Yoo released a statement. “I sincerely apologise to the fans,” Yoo began, “Recently, the company unilaterally notified me of the termination of my contract in preparation for the 2022-2023 season. In addition to seriously damaging my reputation, the company also gave me an unacceptable reason for termination. I plan to carefully consider the company’s reasons for terminating my contract and how to deal with the notice.”

The conflict between GAS and Yoo has spread throughout the off-season basketball world. With the suspension of GAS and the release of Yoo’s statement, it can be said that the structure of the conflict is clearly visible on the surface. I would like to sincerely apologise to the fans who supported the Daegu KOGAS basketball team.

I have done my best as the head coach of Daegu KOGAS Basketball Team for the past two years, but as KOGAS notified me of the termination of my contract on 1 June, I will step down without completing the contract period.

As Daegu Basketball has started again, I sincerely hope that it will become a prestigious team, and I would like to express my sincere gratitude as a coach and as a basketball person to all those who actively took over the E-Land Basketball Team under difficult circumstances for the rebirth and revival of Daegu Basketball and the development of professional basketball.

For the past 16 years, I have been leading the team as head coach, sharing the ups and downs with the players and doing my best in every moment, and while not winning a championship remains a regret in my heart, I have been more rewarded by watching the players grow and seeing them come together as a team and build a cohesive organisation.

Recently, the company has unilaterally notified me of the termination of my contract in preparation for the season, but the reason for the termination is unacceptable as well as seriously damaging to my reputation, so I plan to carefully consider the company’s reasons for terminating my contract and what to do about the notification.

I would like to conclude this statement by saying that I hope you will continue to support the growth of Korean basketball and look forward to the continued success and development of professional basketball.

We will carefully consider and deal with the allegations and situations that have been raised so far so that we are not ashamed of the life we have lived as basketball players for the past 30 years. Once again, we would like to express our sincere gratitude to the fans who have supported the Daegu KOGAS Basketball Team.
