‘Drunk driving’ Kim Min-seok, fined 4 million won… The road to the 2026 Olympics is open

Kim Min-seok (23), a speed skating mid-to-long distance signboard who caused controversy for drunk driving, was sentenced to a fine of 4 million won.

On the 9th, Chief Judge Lee Soo-hyun of Criminal Division 1 of the Cheongju Court sentenced Kim Min-seok, who was handed over to trial for violating the Road Traffic Act, to a fine of 4 million won.토토사이트

According to the rules of the Korea Sports Council, players who are sentenced to a fine of less than 5 million won for drunk driving, etc., cannot acquire national qualifications for two years. Kim Min-seok, who was able to compete for the national team in 2025, opened the possibility of participating in the Milan-Cortina d’Ampezzo Winter Olympics in 2026.

The 2025-2026 national speed skating competition is expected to be held between October and November 2025.

Kim Min-seok won a bronze medal in the men’s 1500m speed skating event at the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics and the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, respectively. Reaching the podium for the second consecutive Olympics, he played an active role as a signboard for mid- to long-distance skating in Korea.

However, in July of last year, he crashed into a sidewalk block boundary while driving his car after drinking alcohol at the Jincheon Athletes’ Village in North Chungcheong Province. Police analyzed CCTV at the time and confirmed that Min-seok Kim had been drinking with three of his fellow players. After estimating his blood alcohol level to the level of license revocation, he was sent to the prosecution with the opinion of indictment without detention.

Kim Min-seok received a summary order of a fine of 8 million won in the Cheongju District Court in March. A fine of more than 5 million won seemed to ruin his participation in the 2026 Olympics. However, Kim Min-seok requested a formal trial and was sentenced to a fine reduced to 4 million won.

The Sports Fair Committee of the Korea Skating Federation issued a suspension of qualification for 1 year and 6 months to Min-seok Kim for drunk driving accidents and drunken disturbances. He will be reinstated as a player in February next year.

Meanwhile, Kim Min-seok currently has his contract with his former team, Seongnam City Hall, terminated and is invincible.
