Doosan sweeps three-game series against Hanwha after ‘Hong Seong-ho’s grand slam + Alcantara’s 10K perfect pitch’ crisis

The Doosan Bears turned a crisis into an opportunity. They swept a three-game series from the Hanwha Eagles in midweek to regain their footing in the race for the top spot.

Doosan won 2-1 against Hanwha in the regular season of the 2023 KBO League on 8 August at Jamsil Baseball Stadium in Seoul. With the win, Doosan swept a three-game midweek series on the 6th and 7th of the month to move to 27 wins, 24 losses, and one draw on the season, keeping pace with the fourth-place NC Dinos. On the other hand, Hanwha, who dropped to 10th place with back-to-back defeats the previous day, failed to find a way to rebound, falling to 32 losses (19 wins, 3 draws) on the season.

The star of the game was Raul Alcantara, who was 2-0 with a 0.60 ERA on the season before this day, and once again dominated the Hanwha bats. He pitched a flawless eight innings, allowing just two hits and walking none while striking out 10.스포츠토토

While Alcantara single-handedly dominated the Doosan mound, the batting line-up was dominated by newly-called-up Hong Seong-ho. Stepping in for the previous day’s replacement starter Park Shin-ji, who was sent down to the second team, he was given a first-team opportunity after batting .358 with eight home runs and a 1.024 OPS (on-base percentage) in 36 games in the second team.

And he took advantage of that opportunity. With runners on first and second in the second inning, Hong took advantage of a forked ball from Kim Min-woo and lined a single to right field between first and second base to load the bases. It was the first hit of his career and would prove to be the game-winning hit.

Hong stepped to the plate with one out in the bottom of the fourth inning, and this time he took advantage of a fastball from Kim Min-woo. The ball was hit to the middle of the infield, but it was hit so hard that Hanwha’s centre fielder Moon Hyun-bin failed to read it and it became a hit. Hong seized the opportunity and made a focused run to second base, turning the fly ball into a double.

After Alcantara’s eighth inning, Doosan turned to Hong Gun-hee to close out the ninth, but he faltered, allowing a bases-loaded walk, and was replaced by Park Chi-guk. Park induced a walk to Noh Si-hwan to load the bases with two outs, and then induced a fly ball to left field to Chae Eun-sung in the fourth to seal the win.

At the plate for Doosan, where Alcantara picked up his seventh win of the season and lowered his ERA to 1.77, Kim Dae-i went 2-for-3 with a walk and Hong Sung-ho went 1-for-2 with a run scored.

For Hanwha, starter Kim Min-woo suffered his sixth loss of the season despite allowing two runs (one earned) in five innings. Han Seung-hyuk, Han Ki-joo, and Kim Ki-jung pitched scoreless innings, but the offence was held scoreless down the stretch, dropping the series to Doosan.

With the win, Doosan won all three games of the midweek series, when its starting line-up was most at stake. Substitute Jang Won-jun won on the 6th, and another substitute, Park Shin-ji, struggled on the 7th before coming back to win in the 7th inning. Alcantara’s perfect game on the eighth turned the tide in their favour.

After the midweek series, Doosan will play a three-game weekend series at home against the KIA Tigers. Hanwha will then return home to face the LG Twins.
