An emotional first win in front of his family. Roenis Elias was jumping for joy.
The SSG Landers’ new foreign pitcher made his first appearance. Elias made his KBO debut on April 24 against the LG Twins in Incheon. His final line was five innings, five hits (one home run), two walks, four strikeouts, and three runs. It wasn’t a quality start, but he still managed to get through five innings without falling apart. Not a bad start considering he’s still adjusting to the league.
The offense helped Elias as well. Park Sung-ho’s grand slam in the bottom of the first inning gave them an early lead. After Elias gave up a home run to Lee Jae-won and an additional run to cut the deficit to one, the SSG bats came through with another run to give them the lead they needed to win. SSG went on to win by a final score of 5-3, giving Elias the win in his debut.
Elias’ family was in attendance at Landers Field that day. Originally from Cuba, Elias’ family arrived at Incheon International Airport on the 18th. Elias arrived a few weeks earlier to acclimatize, and with the help of the club’s staff, he lived on his own and fulfilled his pitching schedule for the Futures.토토사이트
Elias’ wife, son, and daughter, who traveled to Korea for his official KBO debut, watched the game from the stands. They cheered and applauded his first KBO win. After the game, Elias’ family came down to the field for an interview.
Elias was overjoyed after the win was finalized. When he was handed his first win, he kissed the ball and prayed to the heavens.
“In a new league, everyone needs a period of adjustment and it’s hard to get a good result in the first game, but I’m happy to get a win today, especially in a place with a high level of baseball like Korea,” Elias said.
“I was a little nervous because it was my first game, but I think I need to focus on throwing strikes and managing my walks in the next game,” he said. “It was my first game in front of the fans, so I wanted to win, but I also wanted to show my family a winning performance because they were all here,” he added.
Manager Kim Won-hyung also said, “It was Elias’ first game against a strong team, and he pitched five innings. Congratulations on your first win, prepare well, and pitch better in the next game,” he said.
SSG has been playing the season with only one foreign pitcher, and now they have Elias to help them. Will he be able to light the way to victory?
