Pittsburgh Pirates’ Bae Ji-hwan stole a base for the 15th time in 22 days. However, he was replaced by a pinch-hitter after a throwing error.
Bae went 1-for-1 with a walk and a stolen base in the seventh inning of the 2023 Major League Baseball game against the Seattle Mariners at T-Mobile Park in Seattle, Washington, USA, on 28 May. His batting average dropped slightly to .269 from .271.
Bae stepped up to the plate for the first time on the day with two outs in the top of the second inning to face starter Castillo. After being hit in the right thigh by Castillo’s third pitch, Bae went to first base and attempted to steal second on the next at-bat by Palacios. He then raced to third when the catcher’s throw went behind him.
It had been 22 days since Bae stole second base in the first inning against the Toronto Blue Jays on 6 May. Since then, Bae has failed to steal four straight bases and has been caught stealing five times. In particular, he was criticised by local media for his recent stolen base against the Texas Rangers.메이저놀이터
Bae led off the fifth inning with a single, but only managed a grounder to second base. Then, in the bottom of the sixth inning, he made an unfortunate error on a throw to first base with the bases loaded, allowing a runner to advance to second base. It was Bae’s seventh error of the season.
Eventually, Bae was replaced by a pinch-hitter in the top of the seventh inning. With two outs in the top of the seventh, the Pittsburgh bench brought in Castro for Bae.
Meanwhile, Pittsburgh suffered a 5-0 shutout as starter Velasquez struggled, allowing four runs on seven hits and three walks with one strikeout in 2 1/3 innings, while the team’s bats were held in check by opposing starter Castillo (6 1/3 innings, 10 hits, two walks, no runs).
Pittsburgh improved to 26-25 on the season and remained in second place in the National League Central. The first-place Milwaukee Brewers lost on the same day, keeping their lead at half a game.
